When it comes to being successful in the workplace it depends on more than just talent. While talents
and skills are sought after, they can go overlooked and unappreciated which leads to the thought that
just talent alone is overrated.

It is believed that certain personal characteristics can lead you to success in the business world and they
do not require any talent.

Here are 10 practices that will help you succeed and require zero talent:

  1. Being on time: Many successful people view their time as a precious resource. Managing your time well and being punctual for all your commitments in both your business and personal life demonstrates that you honor your commitments, you can be trusted, shows your respect for other people and shows that you are diligent.
  2. Work ethic: Developing a good work ethic is essential to career success. People who display a strong work ethic represent principles that guide their behavior in the workplace. Individuals who display a good work ethic are reliable, they attend functions they commit to and value punctuality. These individuals are dedicated to their jobs, they put in the extra hours and are often very productive. Having a strong work ethic also communicates an individual’s strong character, which increases their chances of success in their work life.
  3. Effort: Effort is a characteristic that separates the successful individuals from the rest of the group. Individuals that get promoted are doing more than just getting their work done. Putting in effort at work communicates that an individual is a team player, they take initiative, make their voice heard and are highly productive. Employers often reward those individuals who show great effort.
  4. Body language: Body language is non-verbal communication that we use in our everyday life that consists of gestures, movements and expressions that can be either intentional or unintentional. We use our body language to deliver messages to people around us. When it comes to the business environment the three most important types of non-verbal communication include; eye contact, posture and appearance. Making appropriate eye contact when talking to someone communicates that you are paying attention and shows respect. Having the correct posture conveys professionalism. And when considering your appearance, it is important to dress per the workplace dress code – ensure your clothes, hair and nails are clean.

Individuals who bring positive energy into the work environment reduces stress, increases individual productivity, improves teamwork which encourages team communication, and increases ability to make good decisions. When you are happy and positive, there is almost nothing you cannot accomplish.
  2. Attitude: You can achieve a lot by simply adjusting your attitude. Positivity is a choice and a good attitude is beneficial in the workplace for several reasons. Having a positive attitude contributes to less stress. Stress can affect your mental and physical wellbeing and can have many short- and long-term effects. By having less stress, you ultimately affect those around you which leads to happy peers. Displaying a good attitude at work contributes to job security, promotes self-empowerment and gives an individual sense of control in their professional and personal life.
  3. Passion: In order to be successful in your career you need to be passionate about your work. Passion is your self-driven attitude towards your job that can lead you to the path of success. Passion is seen as an emotion that comes from within you. It is your drive and motivation. Passion does not go unnoticed – it can lead to rewards and promotions.
  4. Being coachable: Being coachable is an important skill in life if you’re a person that wishes to grow, learn and improve. Being coachable means that you’re ready to transform and embrace change in any form.
  5. Doing extra: Many people are just focused on doing the bare minimum to get by. If you want to succeed in your career you need to be doing extra. When going into the workplace you can do extra by; being extra prepared for meetings, this can be done by arriving with knowledge about topics that may come up and how you can contribute.
